These alarms are meant to disorient an attacker and scare them away. That will give you enough time to leave the area and find a more crowded or safe place. When the alarm is turned on, a loud sound is emitted. This alert tells people nearby that someone is in trouble. The sound is not the same as other common alerts. When researching the type of alarm you want to buy, make sure the alarms you're looking at have a sound level over 130db. At this level, the alarm is loud enough to be heard over normal traffic, car horns and car alarms.

A personal alarm can fit in the palm of your hand and is light enough to carry in your purse or on a keychain. While the sounds, a personal alarm emits will vary, the best sounds are a continuous shrieking noise that is louder than 130db. At this level, it's loud enough for a passerby to hear it over the other outdoor noises, including heavy traffic. Even if the people in the area don't investigate the alarm themselves there is a chance one of them will call the police.

Bear in mind that an attacker is not likely to wait around after you've activated the alarm and risk getting caught. There are various types of alarms on the market, including battery-powered alarms, key ring alarms, and gas alarms. In order to choose the right personal alarm system for you, you need to know the difference between these common types.

Gas Alarms

Gas alarm produces a loud shrilling noise. Gas alarms are simple to activate. All you need to do is push the alarm against an object and it will sound off. It's important to remember because there are no buttons or cords to activate this alarm. Since this alarm is powered by gas, you must keep it away from extreme cold or heat, which can cause the canister to explode.

Battery Alarms

These personal alarms are smaller than a gas alarm, so you can attach them to your belt or can choose a unit that fits on your keychain. Instead of a shrilling noise, this alarm produces a pulsating alarm. Some battery-powered alarms have strobes and torch lights in addition to the sound. This can help attract greater attention during an attack. When you add a personal alarm to the other items you carry with you on a daily basis, you can help to protect yourself in the case of an attack. However, remember a personal alarm can only help you stay safe if you take the reasonable precautions necessary to help keep yourself more secure.
