Hidden Spy Camera Buyer's Guide

There are many options on the market when it comes to choosing a hidden spy camera, with a range of features available. The important thing to bear in mind is your intended purpose for the camera. Where will it be located, and for what purpose are you using it?  Each situation and environment is different, and in the end you may decide that you actually need two different styles of cameras to provide you with the options you need.

One important consideration is the light levels of the environment you plan to record in. If there isn't enough ambient light, you'll want a camera with higher resolution and low light capabilities.

Another concern is whether you'll need the camera to be recording all the time, or only when there are people within camera range. If you don't need 24/7 surveillance then a motion-activated camera makes the most sense. It will allow the camera to be more conservative in its use and storage of data, and will save you from scrolling through hours of footage of an empty room.

What Type Of Environment Will Your Camera Be Installed?

If outdoors, think about what kind of elements it will be exposed to. You'll want to invest in a camera with a weatherproof housing. Once you've decided on an environment and a situation that you'll most likely be recording in, it's time to look over available styles of cameras.

Spy Cams For Internet IPs

Similar to a regular hidden camera, an internet IP spy cam will stream directly to your computer. This style tends to be used in businesses for the monitoring of employees. Such systems can coordinate multiple cameras to keep an eye on several locations. It's a system, rather than a single camera, so it requires a little more effort than just a single spy cam. If you want a wireless multiple camera system that can transmit to a DVR, but you don't need all the bells and whistles of capturing a lot of real-time data, there are simpler systems available. Useful for homes and for businesses, their feed can be streamed to a DVR so you can archive hours of footage for later review.

Hidden Body Spy Cameras

Similar to the hidden cameras you see on television in spy or cop shows, these cameras are built into small items that can be worn on your body. Disguised as buttons, sunglasses, or a pen that sticks out of your shirt pocket, these fun cameras are perfect for capturing footage while you're on the go. Choose an item that will blend into your personal style, and you'll be able to keep tabs on the people around you. Or, leave the item behind in an ideal location, such as a side table, where it will catch people as they come in and out of a room or your front door.

Wireless Mini Spy Cameras

Because of the tiny size of these cameras and their ability to transmit data wirelessly, they are the most popular styles of hidden camera. They can be hidden inside or built into functional commonplace items so that no one would suspect they were there. You can purchase these cameras already installed inside everyday items suitable for your home or business, like wall clocks, tissue boxes, clock radios, smoke detectors, mirrors, and electrical outlets.

Hidden In Plain Sight

These items just fade into the background. No one will suspect that they house a secret camera.  Since there are no wires to run and no complicated setup, anyone can use them. The video feed is transmitted directly to your recorder over the air, and can have a range up to 100 meters, depending on the camera specifications. The latest iterations of these spy cameras have a DVR built in, which will send the feed to your monitor so you can view the video. Other cameras save the recordings onto an SD card. You just take out the SD card and pop it into your computer later on for viewing. With the array of features and camera styles on the market today, you're sure to find exactly the camera you need for your particular situation.
